SUPER METROID: FEAR
After the events on Nolvus, Samus headed back to the Galactic Federation Headquarters to report her mission a success. After receiving her pay for the bounty, Samus heads off to her own living quarters for a much needed rest. However, unbeknownst to either her or the Galactic Federation, the Space Pirates took advantage of her attention being elsewhere to finalize their new plans to take over the galaxy, and finally end the trend of victories by their most hated enemy, Samus. With the major losses of personnel and tech over the years to Samus, the Space Pirates desired to safer way to deal with their enemy, so they devised a fiendish plan.
Having the ability to not care about life, the Space Pirates perfected a device that could cause a mass panic. This device would blanket a small area, and cause the sleeping people to dream. However, these dreams often became nightmares, and when their test subjects died in a dream, they died for real. So with a machine where they could attack Samus from a distance and not lose any of their own, they set off to finish Samus once and for all, and leave the rest of the galaxy open for their domination.
After falling into sleep in her cozy apartment, Samus soon realized something was very wrong. Unable to make the dream go away, she fought all the way through her first mission again. With the conflict finished and disaster averted, Samus woke up in a cold sweat. Meanwhile, the Space Pirates realized that the feedback from Samus mind after completing the mission caused severe damage to their dream machine. They set off to improve it, and make it even more powerful and destructive on the mind. There were 217 unexplained deaths in the area that night.
Researching the deaths scientists found that they all had dreamed recently, and that a very small area was heavily proliferated by entropy particles. Unaware of the source however, they could not give Samus or the Galactic Federation a location to look to destroy the cause of these particles. They did say, that the effect could go both ways, but developing a controller to send the needed feedback would take months, and possibly many more deaths. There was another option. If a dreamer was successful in defeating their dream and caused something massive to happen, then it might cause the entropy effect to backfire and destroy the point of origin.
So Samus is sent on another mission. To save the galaxy from another new tyranny, she had to sleep. This time however, things were much more vivid and felt more real. This time, there were only two options, succeed, or fail. Her most dangerous mission to date, she not only was fighting what was assumed to be new Space Pirate technology and cunning, but also the inner workings of her own mind. How do you fight what your subconscious brings to life? Finding herself slipping into sleep, Samus begins her third mission on Zebes. This time, everything is off. The planet and inner tunnel-works have been greatly expanded, and nothing makes sense. And by nothing makes sense, nothing makes sense. Period. Thus begins Samus greatest mission, against monsters that can only come to life in the dream realm. However, being in a dream also means she can grab powers beyond what is the norm. Samus is the only hope for the galaxy not to fall into... Fear.

You've read the story. You know a little bit. Here is some more background information regarding the start of the hack. DSO (My younger brother.) and I had started trying to make a huge hack together. We were both enraptured with Redesign, and we wanted a bigger and better hack. Both of us didn't know much about hacking back then though, and it eventually came to the point where we decided to break off that hack, and do individual hacks to increase our skill before attempting another co-op effort.
Fear is my individual attempt. I started out planning a short boss-rush type hack, and quickly made some progress making the early stages. But I kept adding to it, and it quickly outgrew a mini boss-rush. So I decided a full-hack of the original was in order. I eventually passed that up, and I am currently working on the second largest hack in existence right now, with the potential to be the biggest ever seen. (In terms of explorable screens.)
You might have a little bit of an idea the work that has gone into now, but that isn't it. Fear is not a large vanilla hack. It has also had more people do some work on it than any other hack. Right now, even incomplete, there has probably been more man-hours put into it than any other hack.

Now, as to what is actually in the hack itself... It is going to be weird. There is a lot of custom stuff in the hack. You can expect bosses to be changed and do some things you may not expect. There will be some custom enemies, bosses, items, and music. There are a few other secrets too. I have turned this into a very ambitious project to make the most impressive hack possible. The hack isn't exactly for beginners. It isn't overly difficult in most places, but some sections of the hack are designed to be very difficult, and since I like some challenge, the bosses can also be extremely hard to defeat. I didn't want a cakewalk where a player can say "that was nice" but have no real feeling of accomplishment. I want finishing Fear to feel like you've really done something. That being said, it isn't the hardest hack out there, especially not exploration-wise. Going to most places is going to be fairly simple and easy. Enemies and traps? Yes. But nothing super ridiculous. No Morph mazes where you can't see where you're going. And I place saves in locations that may cause trouble, so use them.
There is a big focus on collecting items in Fear. Searching For Items is my biggest influence, and as such, there are items all over the place. There are some bosses designed to crush you if you try a low% run, so grabbing items, both open and hidden, is a must to complete the hack. On the other end of the spectrum, collecting 100% is going to be another challenge in itself. There will probably be 5-6 times more collectable items in Fear than the original, so get your Metroid senses ready. On top of that, there are going to be some special little things hidden in Fear, so watch out for those too. (If you can find them!)
There is also a big focus on Grapple Beam. There are a lot of sections that will test your Grapple skills, so get started learning how to use this versatile tool. Might there be an upgrade to it int he game...?

Now for some visuals! Here are some videos about Fear. There may be one more video before the release, but don't hold your breath on that. Ask questions here, leave some comments, and be patient, Fear is a long way off still.
So there you have it. An ambitious project that is actually very far along in its development. There is still a long ways to go, and I certainly encourage discussion and thoughts on it, as seeing interest in it always encourages me to continue working on it. After all, I am looking forward to seeing LPs of it from others and hearing everyone's thoughts in general. Perhaps even some TASes will show up! But anyway, this is it. Don't expect much more information to be given about it before its release at some future date, but keep on the lookout.
